Therapeutic horticulture sessions with elderly people

Therapeutic horticulture sessions in a Gödöllő senior’s home were organised in connection with the Hortus Medicus project in May, June and July 2023. The motivation was mainly to gain experience, as there were very few similar initiatives in Hungary. A series of 10 sessions with 5 participants took place for one and a half hours per week. The senior’s home was fortunate to have received high beds at this time through a volunteer programme, and our initiative was welcomed. The raised beds, professionally managed by our Foundation, are also available for wheelchair users. Careful planning preceded the activity and measuring results is also an important part of the programme. Although detailed evaluation of the results is still ongoing, the qualitative change in the lives of the participants is clearly visible. Following the positive experience, work will continue at the senior’s home, involving more elderly residents. The Diversity Foundation continues to run pilot therapeutic horticulture sessions in a residential home for young people with autism. A summary of what we experienced there will be published later.
